"Growth and comfort don't mix - stay strong and stay the course."
Public service has always been a factor in my family.
My mom, aunts, and uncles all worked in the public sector. It started with my grandfather A.C. who served more than 30 years in public service.
I grew up in East Austin. Coming from the inner city and understanding the challenges and obstacles I had to overcome - that allowed me to understand the community and how to help it thrive.
My background motivates me to keep serving, even when facing obstacles. I find solutions by listening and creating an environment where diverse perspectives can be heard. I just love to figure things out. There's always a solution to a challenge, and I'm up to find it.
I'm Fred Freeman, the Vehicle Coordinator for Austin's Watershed Protection Department. I develop and manage the Fleet Program - everything from acquisitions to preventative maintenance for all the vehicles and equipment. I also instruct at Austin Community College, training Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) employees on specialized heavy equipment all around Texas.
Early in my career at Watershed, I felt like a superhero saving community members from flooding when storms overwhelmed the systems. One time I responded to an emergency when a neighborhood was flooding, with water rising to people's doors. I was able to unclog the drain and the water went down. Seeing the looks on their faces change from fear to excitement is what made me love my job.
Looking ahead, I envision solutions that bring public service and communities closer. I hope to play a role in shaping that future partnership - an even stronger bond between public service and the community. I want to contribute and let my voice be heard. As a public servant, listening is key - active listening walks you into diverse solutions. A supportive, brave leader makes that environment successful.
Reflecting on my career, I'd tell my younger self: stay solution-driven and goal-oriented. Growth and comfort don't mix - stay strong and stay the course.
