"I strive to provide opportunities for students so that they can reach their full potential."
I currently serve as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) in the U.S. Department of Education.
As such, I oversee the programmatic and organizational functions of the OELA including: defining program goals, implementing policy changes, and evaluating program effectiveness. Most importantly, I consider myself an advocate for students.
My career in public service has given me the chance to meet with educators across the country who similarly work to support students. I have met educators who came to this country as immigrants who are now amazing school principals and teachers working in schools where they once attended as students. These individuals know the community, are part of the community, and provide welcoming environments so that the students have opportunities to learn and grow.
As a former teacher, I’ve always wanted to do more for students and working for the U.S. Department of Education has provided me with the opportunity to give back on a larger scale. I’ve worked on teacher quality programs, higher education access, bilingual education, migrant education, and school leadership development. All of these programs and so many others provide opportunities for students and families to access quality education. During my time as a student, I benefited from a number of programs administered by the Department of Education, so I understand the impact that they can have on someone’s educational journey. This continues to motivate me to work towards providing the same and better opportunities for students so that they can reach their full potential.
