I grew up poor and needed government programs to work well.

Many times they did not. My family was on Medicaid and the food stamp program. I remember worrying that we might lose or damage that light blue piece of paper that showed we were eligible for Medicaid, because doing so might mean our health was put on hold and we couldn’t receive the care we needed. I also remember spending hours in government offices, filling out paperwork, and waiting for what seemed like forever to be told whether we were eligible for food stamps. My memory replays these episodes of being denied, only to later be deemed eligible. Being so vulnerable was so painful that I vividly recall how dejected and worthless I felt so many decades ago.  It was clear to me from these experiences that the government can and should work more efficiently for the people it serves.

Today, public service is a productive way to live out my passion and values. I am a Management and Program Analyst for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. In my role I analyze human capital data to help improve the diversity, efficacy, and efficiency of our workforce. By understanding and analyzing information about the agency’s workforce, we can identify any skills gaps, recruit the right talent, retain our employees, improve employee experience, and optimize the work of the agency. My analyses provide actionable feedback for leaders at all levels. Not only does this work lead to important change in government, but it allows me to be a mentor, model, and connector for those who want better for our government and fellow citizens.
