"In public service, you have to be agile and ingenious because resources are slim but the work of helping people must get done."
Since college, I’ve been drawn to the idea that a career in public service is one of the most impactful ways a person can spend their life.
Through my career in the public and private sector, I’ve discovered this to be true. In public service, you have to be agile and ingenious because resources are slim but the work of helping people must get done. I have loved working with people who place the mission of serving the needs of the public first, and in my current role in my hometown, as the elected Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, I’m incredibly fortunate to not only serve the public but also to improve the quality of life for our dedicated employees as well.
Most of my career has been in public service, from beginning my legal career working for a judge in this very courthouse, to serving on the staff of the state senate as counsel, and advising a $100 billion financial services government sponsored enterprise, to spending the last 11 years as a judge advocate in the Army Reserve. At the Clerk’s Office, our team leads a professional operation of two hundred civil servants who make our courthouses run. We also operate a Help Center through partnership with a local university that gives legal information to thousands of visitors each year who don’t have an attorney to access our courts. Our focus has been to improve transparency, increase accessibility, foster a culture of innovation, and ensure that our office reflects the diversity of Hamilton County.
The highlight of my career has hands-down been my current role as Clerk of Courts. I have been able to make a major impact on the culture of our organization. Being able to lead a team of compassionate, smart, devoted, and hardworking public servants, and being able to show them how much their work matters and that they are appreciated, has been the best possible reward.
