"I am honored to be part of the vision that continues to strengthen the future of public health."
I have served in the public health field for over 20 years.
I currently serve as the Deputy Director of the Regional Public Health Office at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and have served in the public health field for over 20 years. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a diverse spectrum of roles ranging from epidemiology to program evaluation and development.
I was originally trained in nutrition, anthropology, and epidemiology with the ultimate goal of working in the health field and to play a role in influencing positive community change. My first job was a private sector evaluation role funded by a state grant. This position inspired me to move into public service so that I could be part of influencing standards and policies that have a statewide impact. The highlight of my public service career was when I was tasked with supporting California’s COVID-19 response in 2020. In the early days of the pandemic, I went from being a branch chief overseeing California’s obesity prevention program to working 18 hour days, seven days a week.
As part of my role, I helped lead California’s implementation of statewide initiatives in county data monitoring, vaccine equity campaigns, and balanced support while other emergencies overlaid the COVID-19 pandemic. There were certainly personal sacrifices in the form of less time with family and loved ones. My assignment which was supposed to last for two months ended up lasting for almost four years. This experience led to an enormous amount of personal and professional growth, and I had the privilege to work alongside some of the most dedicated people in public health. We supported local coordination of services, shared health data, and coordinated two-way statewide communication.
I am honored to be part of the vision that continues to strengthen the future of public health by leading the Regional Public Health Office at CDPH as its first Deputy Director. I endeavor to continue being a servant leader, and to work in partnership with state and local public health leaders, supporting the work that positively impacts our diverse communities throughout California.
