I had the great fortune of working for numerous companies in the digital healthcare sector.

What inspired you to join public service?

About eight years ago, I decided it would be an incredible opportunity to use what I learned in the private sector and apply it to large programs that are delivering benefits and services to the American people. Our friends, neighbors, and communities deserve a secure digital government experience and it’s been my honor to work towards delivering modern policies, products, and services for them.

What has been the highlight of your public service career so far?

The highlight of my public service career so far has been the tremendous people I’ve met along the way. From our customers – veterans, small business owners, researchers, military service members and their families – to federal employees doing whatever it takes to deliver on their critical missions. Seeing the business of government up close and leveraging the power of technology to reduce burden for our customers and the federal workforce has been so rewarding.

What impact, if any, has your identity had on your career?

I often tell people that ‘I’m out every day.’ I live my life authentically, have a wonderful wife, family and friends, and fantastic colleagues from across a diverse career. I’ve never felt that I had to be someone other than who I am – in my personal or professional life. And, I think that’s important for everyone to see every day.

How important is representation to the future of the federal workforce? What can public servants do to create safer spaces for diverse identities?

Being kind is always a great way to start. After that, recognizing that when we cast a wide net and sustain diverse representation in our workforce, we meet people from different backgrounds and with different lived experiences. This helps us learn from one another and design a government that will work for everyone.

Any advice to early professionals concerned about how their identity could limit their career?

Be curious and listen to your inner voice. If you sense something isn’t a good fit for you – a person, a job, an agency or a company, pay attention and find a place where you can be true to yourself and surrounded by people you can learn from.
