"The scale of this work is unparalleled."
I’m currently the Director of Design at 18F, which is a technology and design consultancy for and within the federal government.
I manage a team of design managers, UX designers, product designers, service designers & content strategists working in the federal government on large-scale digital transformation.
While the scale of my work now is unparalleled and I’ve done a lot of interesting things in my career, I’m most proud of my time in local government in Bloomington, Indiana. I led the design of an overhaul of a decade-old municipal website, and it was a very scrappy in-house team migrating from a custom CMS to Drupal. The entire project took nearly two years, but the satisfaction of going through multiple rounds of user feedback involving the public; teaching civil servants a new way to manage their own content; and actively involving people at every stage was incredibly rewarding. Winning awards was cool, but the best part was people seeing you at the grocery store or at parties and telling you they were able to find something a lot easier than they were able to before. I’ve gained an immense amount of satisfaction from knowing I can work on things that make people's lives a little better.
