"Impacting the health and wellbeing of others."
I was born with a disability (Spina Bifida).
In 2012, I was hired at the United States Department of Labor (DOL) under the Schedule A hiring authority, which encourages the representation of individuals with disabilities in the federal government. For three years, I was the president of the Disability Action Group, an employee resource group for persons with visible and invisible disabilities within DOL. I was able to coordinate interesting presentations and influence policies pertaining to employees with disabilities. I now get to do that as my full-time work, which is a highlight for me.
Today, I am a Disability Program Manager for the Office of Human Resources at DOL. In this role, I focus on how the Department can better encourage, hire and retain individuals with disabilities. This has been an important theme in many areas of my life. My father worked in public health for the Department of Health in Chiapas, Mexico for 46 years. I was inspired by his dedication to individuals and to the various systems that impact the health and wellbeing of these individuals. I was also drawn to public service because of the mobility and career paths available once you join public service. The government provides important and necessary health benefits and other supports that allow me to remain healthy and supported at work. This is something that all employees should have and that I work to ensure exists for individuals with disabilities within DOL.
