"I know that together, we can build a better state for all."
I watched my father die in front of me when I was 3 years old due to a rare but treatable medical condition after he was turned away from the hospital because of the way he looked.
I saw the resiliency of my mom who raised my sisters and me on her own. I knew I wanted to be a public servant to fix the broken systems that affected my family, and so many families like mine. And I know that together, we can build a better state for all.
Today, I am the 63rd governor of the state of Maryland. Every day I work to make sure that state government is acting with urgency to address the challenges facing Marylanders. The mission of my administration is the same value I learned when I joined the military at 17 years old: Leave no one behind.
From my service as a captain with the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan, to acting as the CEO of one of the largest nonprofits fighting poverty in America, to my current service as the governor of Maryland, I’ve been humbled to serve across so many different sectors of our society. We’ve been in office for only one month and already it is clear: Maryland is leading. From action to protect reproductive rights to working on advancing the $15 minimum wage to build a more competitive and equitable economy, we are moving fast and we are moving differently. This is our time and we are going to make this Maryland’s decade.
