Being a positive factor in people's lives has always been a driving force for me.

I owe my life to public service in more ways than one, through participation and service to others. Being a positive factor in people's lives has always been a driving force for me. Whether it was in my early start in Parks and Recreation, being part of the U.S. Military, or now serving as the City Manager of Kemah, Texas, the urge to serve has always been my compass.

Growing up with a single mom who worked constantly, I spent most of my time with my grandma. We had humble beginnings. I relied heavily on city events and parks and recreation programs. That's where it all started for me.

That desire to serve carried me through the military, and after finishing my service, I came full circle back to parks and recreation. After about 18 years in that field, I had the opportunity to become a City Manager.

Public service means addressing the needs of your community. My grandmother taught me that you have two ears and one mouth, so you should listen twice as much as you talk. That's been my philosophy in public service. I take it all in and choose to be part of the change I wish to see.

The rewards come in different forms. Sometimes it's a child saying, “I passed my class!” or “Here's my high school diploma.” Other times it's residents thanking you because their homes no longer flood when it rains. Different joys, but equally meaningful.

We must find ways to engage our residents early and often. That's how we build the foundation for a stronger community and prepare the next generation of public servants. The next public leader could be anywhere.

There are three types of people in the world, those who lead, those who follow, and those that get out of the way. I choose to lead!
